Episode 2 – The White Knight Awakens

Continuing from last episode, Lelouch is still surrounded by the bodies of Japanese civilians and the Royal Guard members he ordered to commit suicide.  Villetta Nu shows up in her Knightmare Frame and interrogates Lelouch about what happened there.  He tries to use his Geass on her, but it only works with direct eye contact.  He coaxes her out with a lie and then manages to get her Knightmare Frame.  A minute later, Villetta somewhat humorously “wakes up,” looking around to see what happened to Lelouch and her Knightmare Frame.

code-geass-suzakuBack at the main position that the Britannian Army has set up in Shinjuku, Lloyd Asplund, in typically silly fashion, wakes Suzaku from his hospital bed.  It is moments like these that make Lloyd one of the funniest characters in Code Geass, since he really does not care much about people, and he is so wonderfully eccentric.  It turns out that, when Suzaku was shot, the bullet only hit a watch that he had under his uniform as a keepsake.  Even though he is still injured, and he is just an “eleven,” Lloyd offers him the possibility of piloting a Knightmare Frame.  In the Shinjuku ghetto, the Britannian Army continues to brutally gun down innocent Japanese people.  Kallen talks with the leader of her resistance cell, Ougi Kaname, and decides to act as a decoy.  Lelouch calls Shirley Fenette at Ashford Academy and has her check the news to see if anything is on about Shinjuku.  When he finds out that the news is just reporting traffic restrictions, Lelouch hangs up on Shirley.  Shirley complains about how he always hangs up on her.  Lelouch then concocts a brilliant plan to use Kallen and her resistance cell to defeat the Britannians and get him out of there.  He figures out her frequency and uses a wireless radio to give her orders on how to escape Jeremiah Gottwald.  He also gives the resistance cell a bunch of Knightmare Frames from a train for his plan.  Clovis and Bartley talk about the supposed “gas capsules,” and Tamaki Shinichiro, another member of the resistance cell, kvetches about trusting Lelouch.  Lelouch then relays orders to each of the resistance cell members and slowly beats back the Britannian Army.  When Clovis breaks formation to surround the resistance cell, Lelouch has them travel underground and attack from below, destroying an entire group of Britannian Knightmare Frames.  This is a sample of what is yet to come, since Lelouch ends up using his great strategic and tactical mind and completely outsmarts people all the time.  Lloyd joyfully offers the services of his secret weapon, a new Knightmare Frame, to stop the resistance cell, and Clovis reluctantly accepts as his other plans fail.

Suzaku gets in his pilot suit and launches in the Lancelot, a brand new Knightmare Frame that Lloyd and Cecile Croomy made as the first seventh generation Knightmare Frame.  This is one of the signature Knightmare Frames of the show, along with Kallen’s Gurren Mk. II, which shows up a bit later.  He goes into Shinjuku and starts slaughtering the resistance cell’s stolen Knightmare Frames one by one.  Lelouch puts on his “How can this be happening?!” face, the one that you see every time something he did not predict happens.  When Suzaku spots Lelouch, Kallen tries to help him.  Lelouch takes the opportunity to escape, and Suzaku tries to pursue.  When Lelouch starts destroying the buildings around them to cover his retreat, Suzaku rescues a woman who falls from one of the buildings.  Lelouch goes to Clovis’ main base, where he uses his Geass on a guard to let him pass.  Ougi, Kallen, Tamaki, the rest of the cell make it to a shelter with a lot of other Japanese people, but the Britannian Army arrives to kill them all.  Right before they get the chance to pull the trigger, Clovis orders them to pull out and to assist in helping with the injured Japanese people.  However, Clovis only did this at gunpoint, with Lelouch holding said gun.  Lelouch then reveals himself to Clovis as Lelouch vi Britannia, the seventeenth in line to the throne of the Holy Britannian Empire, and Clovis’ younger brother who always used to beat him at chess.
