Episode 5 – The Princess and the Witch
Somewhere in the Middle East, a group of bizarre Knightmare Frames attack some tanks. Then, a group of purple Knightmare Frames from Britannia bearing lances, led by Andreas Darlton and Gilbert G.P. Guilford, attack the strange Knightmare Frames. Behind them, a city burns, and another purple Knightmare Frame, this one with horns, stands in the flames. It is piloted by Cornelia li Britannia, the second princess of Britannia and the Commander-in-Chief of the Imperial Army. They defeat the enemy Knightmare Frames and claim the territory as Area 18. Cornelia then vows to bring Zero out into the open and get revenge for the death of her brother, Clovis.
Lelouch returns home after his world debut as Zero to find C.C. with Nunnally making paper cranes. Considering that the last time he saw her was in a series of visions and as a dead body, I would have been a lot more surprised than him in that situation. C.C. has convinced Nunnally that she is a friend of his. Lelouch drops a tea cup and uses that as an excuse to drag C.C. out of the room and question her. C.C. nonchalantly asks Lelouch if he likes the power that she gave him, and he talks to her about his plans for defeating Britannia. She then takes off her clothes and slips into his bed, which puts Lelouch into another funny awkward position with a girl. There is another one of those later this episode! Lelouch is forced to allow her to stay with him. Lloyd and Cecile talk about how multiple different terrorist attacks around the country and Jeremiah’s demotion following the “orange” affair. At the Japan Liberation Front headquarters, one of the members tries to convince Toudou to assist Zero in his efforts, but Toudou declines, not wanting Zero to trip up their own agenda. Back at Ashford, C.C. eats some pizza, her favorite food, which you see her eating on many different occasions throughout the show, and asks Lelouch just what orange was. Lelouch responds that orange was nothing, just a way to sow discord in the Britannian ranks. Meanwhile, due to Zero’s statement, Suzaku is acquitted in the Clovis trial. As he leaves the building, a young pink-haired girl falls from above, and he catches her. She says that her name is Euphie and says that people are chasing after her, asking Suzaku to help her. Kewell and other Britannian purebloods plot to punish Jeremiah for his supposed betrayal in the orange affair, despite Jeremiah’s innocence. Suzaku and Euphie walk around, chatting about things, including Suzaku’s identity and Area 11/Japan. They also find an injured cat, to which Euphie gives a bandage. The cat bites Suzaku when he tries to pet it and later runs away. That cat later comes back, joins the student council, and is given the name “Arthur.” Lloyd and Cecile notice Suzaku and Euphie walking around, but they choose to do nothing. Euphie tells Suzaku that she is a student and that she wants to see as much of Japan as she can before the end of the day, when she has to return to the Britannian homeland. She then asks Suzaku to take her to Shinjuku.
At Ashford Academy, Kallen asks Lelouch if he would be able to track the call she received from Zero a few episodes back. Lelouch answers that it would be impossible before noticing C.C. walking around the campus. He pulls Kallen close to him to keep her from seeing C.C., resulting in the second awkward position with a girl of the episode. Shirley notices this and misinterprets the incident. Lelouch later chastises C.C. for walking around as she pleases, though C.C. does not really care.
Lelouch also reveals that he has been experimenting with his Geass power to see its limitations, making a girl come back and scratch plus signs into the wall every day. Elsewhere, Bartley is shipped out of Japan in figurative chains for his supposed treason. In Shinjuku, Euphie and Suzaku visit the memorial for the people who died in the recent massacre. Jeremiah is told that Zero has been spotted in Shinjuku, but this is a plot by Kewell to trap him, as Villetta learns. Britannian students are taking pictures of the memorial in a rather unrespectful way, and Tamaki, Minami, and Yoshida come to accost them. When Tamaki threatens them, Suzaku steps in. However, the students’ camera is broken, and they are angry with Suzaku for not coming in sooner. Euphie slaps one of them for criticizing Suzaku. Back at Ashford, C.C. asks Lelouch why he chooses to fight Britannia. Then, simultaneously, Lelouch and Suzaku talk about the problems of the world, like war and racism, and both talk about how they wish to solve these problems. Both C.C. and Euphie ask them how they would solve these problems. Suzaku says that he does not know, but Lelouch answers that someone would merely have to win. Suzaku and Euphie then spy some smoke in the distance. Jeremiah is being attacked by Kewell and his allies for the orange affair. Lloyd and Cecile show up and provide Suzaku with the Lancelot, and Suzaku leaps in to assist. Villetta also arrives to help Jeremiah. Euphie runs out into the battlefield, and Kewell throws a special mine at Suzaku. Suzaku guards Euphie, and Euphie reveals herself as Euphemia li Britannia, third princess of Britannia and Cornelia’s younger sister. She orders everyone to stand down, and Suzaku apologizes for not having treated her properly earlier. Euphemia tells Suzaku that she wants to help him achieve a world without any of the problems he talked about before, signaling the beginning of their long and cute relationship. The two of them will be working together in a professional and a bit more intimate capacity for a while. Later on, Euphemia greets her sister Cornelia as the latter arrives in Area 11, and Cornelia chastises her for disappearing like that. Cornelia then yells at the soldiers and officials waiting for them, wondering where Zero is.
At Ashford the next day, Lelouch is surprised to find that he has a new classmate: Suzaku.
