The What is and How to of Cosplay

Most of the anime character how-to articles that we’ve run so far on how-to cosplay have been extremely specific to a single character. However, many fans might not need this information right away. Instead, for the cosplay beginner, the most useful guide would be one that walks them through the basic steps of pulling off a successful episode.

We’ve produced this how-to with that in mind, so that we might better help those who are either very new to the hobby, or want to design their own costume experience from the ground up.

Sometimes, all you need to get started is a bit of friendly encouragement, and it’s our sincere hope that this helps your character get off the ground.

1) Decide on a character that you know something about. You don’t want to cosplay as a character that you’re not too familiar with.

2) Make sure to have interacted with the series that their from. Characters for cosplay events come from anime, comics, manga, movies, video games and many other sources.

3) Remember that not all cosplay characters have to be animated. Many people choose characters from live action series as well.

4) Get into the mindset of the character. The art of cosplay isn’t simply about dressing up, and many cosplayers want to try to act out the roles that they have been fit into.

5) Since many anime characters have quite peculiar colors of hair, you might want to experiment with some wigs. Some companies have taken to marketing them specifically for this purpose.

6) Perhaps you’d like to look over some of the fascinating works online. The Internet plays host to a large number of cosplay images, both from North America and Japan. Some of these individuals are even actual cosplay professionals.

7) Likewise, you may want to check out costume patterns online. Many fans fully give out their secrets freely.

8) If all else fails, there are several retailers who market professionally tailored cosplay costumes to choose from. These are often designed with the most popular characters in mind.

9) While online, you might find an Internet community to join. These sorts of organizations can give tips and share news for cosplay just as well as any other hobby.

10) Try to get together with other cosplayers in your area. Different fans excel at different parts of costume making, so it’s nice to have both a talent pool and a new group of friends.

11) Consider a competition; many events host some sort of cosplay contest or a sort of makeshift fashion show based around the art.

12) Think about playing as a character from a less popular anime. Though there will probably be a sea of people as Naruto or Sakura, how many depictions of Renton Thurston will there be?

13) Ask someone to show you how to sew. Having some skills with the thread and needle are invaluable.

14) Make sure your costume is durable before showing it off. Having it tear or come apart would be disastrous, but if you catch it before hand, repairs shouldn’t be difficult.

15) Most importantly, enjoy yourself. A lot of people end up taking themselves far too seriously, and don’t get any real fun out of it.

Claymore Scene 26: To the Successors

Clare back to normal

The thrilling conclusion to Claymore takes us back to the battle we ended with last time, and the incantation of how Teresa’s flesh is within Clare. Clare is enraged with the idea that she is fighting the very one who killed Teresa. She promises to kill Priscilla.

Priscilla, however, is enraged with the idea that she is fighting against the very symbol of what she believes killed her family. Raki, from the sideline, tries to help Clare by telling her when to look out. He doesn’t seem to wish to enter the battle though.

The two fighters clash and the pair transform shape as they fight. Priscilla has this down to an art, while Clare seemingly cannot control it. She pulls out all the stops though, striking Priscilla with sword attacks from every single possible angle. Isley is impressed.

The other Claymores who are watching can’t believe the intensity of the battle. Raki is not so amused. He is appalled by the idea that Clare and Priscilla are fighting, because of their importance to him. Clare almost fulfilled an important role to Raki, while he had recently been taking pity on Priscilla’s Awakened state. It is a sad state of affairs from his point of view.

Amidst the fighting, Priscilla is able to grab Clare while Raki screams for her to be let go. Priscilla is a mighty giant that seems almost totally unstoppable from this vantage point. Could she come out on top?

Priscilla, in her deranged state, comments that Clare is not Teresa. She finally realizes the truth however, that doesn’t stop her from trying to kill Clare. Priscilla throws her hapless prey with great force towards the ground.

Mocking Clare for her lack of wings, Priscilla uses her green bolts of light to strike the weakened opponent. Clare starts to cough up blood from this. As she is falling though, Priscilla goes after her with sword in hands…err…claws? Clare hits the ground, but rises up in a crazed state and starts to rip apart Priscilla’s body.

Priscilla, looks up and sees “Teresa” and is struck with fear and returns to her state as a girl. It is actually Clare who has recovers her sword and raises it above the reformed Priscilla’s head. Raki intervenes, begging Clare for mercy towards Priscilla despite the fact that she killed Teresa. He says that everyone is lucky to be alive, and that Yoma has killed his family and that of Priscilla’s. The bloodshed can stop now, Raki claims, and the most important thing now is to keep Clare from fully Awakening.

Raki , while hugging Clare, tries to comfort her, reminding her of the promise about returning to him. He tells her he loves her, and that she can fight Awakening and that he will protect her so that she can live the remainder of her life as a human being (something Teresa wanted for her as well). Clare claims she can’t change anything now, and spears Raki with her own Yoma spines! Or…has she? No! Raki is left unscathed while Jean takes the onslaught.

Jean, the woman who has sacrificed so much for Clare; has taken the hit. She compliments Raki on his bravery. Jean says she’s repaying the favor that Clare lent her, and tries to turn Clare back from her Awakened form. Clare, no matter how deranged she’s becomes, doesn’t want Jean to die.

Yoki power spills out everywhere as Jean tries to make Clare revert back to her previous self. She eventually does finally recover, and soon finds herself as a regular woman once more. Yet she is hunched over the body of Jean.

Isley appears and grasps Priscilla, saying that the whole thing was quite entertaining. He says he doesn’t want any more violence, and starts to release Yoma power. He also says he will meet up with Raki again, and then leaves.

In the next scene, Galatea and Rubel converse briefly about whether or not Clare is still alive. However, they seem ready to drop the issue entirely. We transition from here to Clare and Raki at what seems to be the grave of Jean.

Deneve and Miria express their wishes to leave the Organization and investigate the secrets that it has been withholding from them. Helen’s not amused by this, though, and says it would be quite boring. However, she ends up saying that she is going to leave as well and prepares herself to join the others.

The three cross swords, saying that they will meet again. Back at the gravesite, Clare goes through the memories of what Jean told her before she sacrificed herself. She won’t be joining the Organization again either, and instead will travel with Raki.

Each of them is shown once again embarking on their new adventures, and even Isley seems to have turned to a better way of life. Looking once more towards Jean’s grave, Clare thinks that she sees the image of Teresa. Teresa’s voice tells her to live as a human and goodbye.

Yuki Cross Cosplay in 15 Easy Steps

Yuki Cross

Perhaps in some ways she embodies pathos, but many fans chomp at the bit for the chance to become more like Yuki Cross. The leading role in the dark saga of Vampire Knight, she is torn between two worlds and constantly must fight to maintain her membership in both. She leads a dual life in many other ways as well, for she considers herself weak and yet desires strength. Therefore, her character is one of conflict and a difficult pretense.

To take on the cloak of the night takes an incredible degree of will and understanding. You will have to truly be in touch with your inner self on many levels. It is a difficult journey, but so is the one that Yuki was forced to walk. It certainly has its rewards.

1) Be able to juggle different things in your life as best as you’re able. Yuki Cross is required to be both a student and a guardian, and has to work hard to make any achievement in either pursuit.

2) Recognize where you need to improve yourself; Yuki has said that her feeling of weakness is something she doesn’t like about herself.

3) Never stop looking for the truth; Yuki continues to search for Kaname’s true nature until she finally figures it out.

4) As for cosplaying as Yuki, she tends to be shown in her usual black school uniform. The shade of the uniform indicates whether or not a character attends the Day Class, in Vampire Knight.

5) A regular black skirt can be used for the uniform, though you may wish to add some white trim to several areas to make it that much more like Yuki’s.

6) The top piece may be a bit more difficult. There are professional cosplay uniforms available, but if you have sewing skills you may be able to make your own. Once again, it may also be possible to take a stock black jacket and add white trim to bring it more into line with Yuki’s.

7) Likewise, make sure the cuffs of the sleeves are pulled back and also receive a measure of this white trim. It may be best to consult an image while working.

8) Underneath her skirt, Yuki wears long black stockings. Nylon stockings are a readily available commodity, and they therefore shouldn’t be too hard to attain.

9) The red necktie is an important part of the uniform, and seems to be done in a particular way. It’s worn as a bow with two strands falling outwards away from the neck.

10) Yuki’s hair is brown and seems to be slightly tousled. While there are certainly wigs available, it’s fortunate that her style is relatively easily styled on some types of natural hair.

11) Yuki’s scythe is an integral part of her ensemble, but it’s not the easiest to replicate. Of course, many types of basic plastic scythes are available as costume items, but the blade might be too small to be an effective representation. Some fans have suggested making a blade from foam, if you have the ability to safely shape it.

12) Yuki Cross will often wear a piece in her hair. A fake flower or a piece of ribbon, properly set, would add quite a bit to a Yuki cosplay.

13) To pose as Yuki, you may want to work with a wide range of emotions. Emotions, and sometimes a stoic lack thereof, are an important aspect of her multifaceted character.

14) As a student, Yuki Cross is kind and cheerful. She is a soothing individual in this role. Though she does seem rather daft at times, it may be best to play up her positive aspects to maintain a level of accuracy.

15) Make sure to build up your collection of Vampire Knight merchandise. The original manga and anime, as well as numerous anime character goods, will give you great ideas to extend your personality as this complex character.
